The following are general descriptions of HPA Committees. Some Committees have their own webpages, which are indicated with a link for "More Information".

Bylaws Committee

Chair: Aliya Chaudry, PT, MBA, JD

Description: The Bylaws Committee reviews and updates the Section bylaws as necessary to keep them current with the APTA requirements and to meet the objectives of the Section. The Committee presents proposed amendments to the membership and updates the Policy and Procedure Manual to maintain consistency with Section and Association policies and actions.

Primary Programs/Projects: Bylaw development and revision; organization policy development.

Finance Committee

Chair: Lori Pearlmutter, PT, MPH

Description: The Finance Committee is responsible for overseeing the financial affairs of the Section. The Treasurer is the Chair of the Committee. The Committee prepares the annual budget and reviews and prepares amendments to policies and procedures associated with the Section's finances.

Primary Programs/Projects: Develop and review budget and financial reports; coordinate annual internal audit.

Membership Services

Chair: Natalie Novak, PT, DPT

Description: Member Services develops the Section marketing, membership recruitment and retention plans. This Committee, often in collaboration with the Research Committee, occasionally conducts member surveys to determine members' needs and expectations of the Section, as well as practice/policy trends among members.

Primary Programs/Projects: Market benefits of HPA membership; coordinate and staff HPA booth at national meetings; coordinate annual Networking Breakfast at CSM

Nominating Committee

Chair: Devin Seratte, PT, DPT

Description: This committee consists of three members (one chair, two members) who promote and recruit HPA The Catalyst members for leadership roles. The nominating committee members serve for 3 years, and the chair role is filled in the final year of service. This committee coordinates all HPA awards as well as monitors and recommends HPA members for APTA awards.

Program Committee

Co-Chairs: Tyra Mitchell,PT, DPT | Trevor Carlson, PT

Description: This busy committee coordinates scheduling and content for the Section's many educational sessions at APTA's Combined Sections Meeting and audio conferences for the Section. This committee is unique in that it offers a six-year term where all other committees are three-year appointments.

Primary Programs/Projects: Develop and coordinate continuing education content for CSM and audio conferences

Publications Committee

Chair: Roland Perreault, PT, DPT, MBA

Description: Publications committee is responsible for the Resource member newsletter, and the Physical Therapy Journal of Policy, Administration and Leadership (PTJ-PAL), the Section's peer-reviewed journal. Committee members assist with soliciting and editing content for the monthly Resource, and policies associated with Publications. The Managing Editor of PTJ-PAL provides oversight of all manuscripts during the submission and peer review process. Committee members may serve as mentors for new authors.

Primary Programs/Projects: Solicit and edit content for HPA Resource/PTJ-PAL; manage peer-review process for PTJ-PAL

Practice & Payment Committee

Chair: Anne Biala, PT, MSPT  

Description: Practice & Payment responds to inquiries from HPA members on topics related to payment and practice of physical therapy. Additionally, they participate and collaborate with external stakeholders on projects related to payment and practice.

Primary Programs/Projects: Represent HPA at APTA-sponsored federal and state government affairs forums annually


PT Proud

Co-Chairs: Melissa Hoffman, PT | Karla Bell, PT, DPT

Description: PT Proud unites PTs, PTAs and students toward a common goal of affecting change in the profession of physical therapy through advocacy, policy and promotion of competency education. We aim to address health disparities and positively affect the health care experience of LGBT+ patients, students and clinicians.


Research Committee

Chair: Janet Dolot, PT, DPT, DrPH, OCS

Description: The Research Committee works to stimulate professional research in the areas of physical therapy management, administration, health services and policy. This Committee solicits and reviews abstracts for poster and platform presentations on behalf of the Section for the APTA's Combined Sections Meeting (CSM). The Research Committee selects winners annually for the Section's Best Poster and Best Platform presentations at CSM. The Committee also solicits and reviews research grant proposals for potential funding through the Section's Grant Program, then makes recommendations to the HPA Board regarding proposal funding awards.

Primary Programs/Projects: Solicit and review CSM poster and platform abstracts; review and recommend HPA grant proposals
