Data Standardization in Physical Therapy: Analytics, Interoperability, and The Registry

Data has power. We can use data to influence clinical decisions. We can improve care to populations. We already use data for research. We use data in our daily lives. We use algorithms to make meaning out of the data. In short, data can teach us, inform us, and help us make decisions. We know of the saying “garbage-in, garbage-out” and we know that data standardization can help to improve the quality of the data in and the data out.

Join HPA Tech Sig members Matt Elrod, PT, DPT, MEd, NCS, Daniel J. Vreeman, PT, DPT, MSc, Steve Wilkinson, PT, PhD, and Robert Latz, PT, DPT, CHCIO, for this exciting discussion with some of the first clinical informaticists in the physical therapy profession. Learn about the current state of standardization and interoperability within healthcare in general, and specifically within physical therapy. Discover the importance of standardizing our language and utilizing similar terminology in physical therapy. Learn how professors bring data standardization to the forefront with clinical informatics coursework. Explore how some are using standardized data within the PT Registry to improve care across populations. Discuss how an organization can measure and improve care with standardized data.

Educational objectives:
1) State three benefits of utilizing standardized data when providing care in physical therapy.
2) Discuss some current examples of good standardization in physical therapy, including the effect on care provided.
3) Describe next steps APTA Sections are now involved in for data standardization in our physical therapy profession.
